Responding to a Comment on Reddit
First I’d like to apologize for not releasing a newsletter on Wednesday. Time got away from me. With that being said here is what I wanted to write about this week.
Recently on Reddit I got this response to my latest newsletter.
I am copying and pasting their comment exactly as they wrote it:
“This post sucks. Grass fed meat costs too much. Vegetables don't hurt us, thats a hypo myth. Soy doesn't hurt us either unless its in large quantities. Next time do more research. What do people with hypothyroidism need, their medicstion, thats all. No one needs to avoid any gluten, soy, or dairy. I eat whatever u want and feel fine. People need to just chill, take their medicstion correctly and eat what they want and notice what makes them feel good or bad.”
There are vegetables that aren’t ideal for thyroid health especially if you are hypothyroid. You can do a Google search and get over 900K results for “vegetables harmful for thyroid” As an example, cruciferous vegetables, which include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and kale, have been thought to interfere with how your thyroid uses iodine. Iodine plays a role in hormone production in the thyroid gland. The truth is, you can — and should — eat these veggies.
So eating these aren’t bad however, the way that you prepare them is the key. It is recommended by many sources to cook these vegetables. “Cooking cruciferous vegetables lessens their goitrogenic properties,” says Luis O. Rustveld, PhD, RD, a dietitian and assistant professor at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. You can find the quote in this article Do You Really Need to Give Up Kale, Cauliflower, and Other Cruciferous Vegetables When You Have Hypothyroidism?
To the commenters point about grass fed meat. I can buy Laura’s Lean grass fed ground beef at Dillon’s for $6.99. I regularly get a coupon for $1.00 off so that brings it down to $5.99 for a pound of 93/7 lean grass fed beef. I also have a SNAP - food assistance card - so $5.99 is all I pay. I am also able to buy lean cuts of chicken and pork as well as salmon. You have to know how to shop.
Soy. Since I have with intention given up soy it has helped reduce the inflammation on my thyroid so it can function properly. I actually credit my significant weight loss to totally giving up soy. I will be doing a post on foods that have soy in them later this month so please be on the look out for that.
I would have never lost the weight without doing research on what I need to do to help my thyroid be a healthy thyroid. Yes taking your medication is critical but you also have to help yourself out so your medication doesn’t have to work so hard in your body. By just living with the mentality that my medication was enough it allowed me to slip into a false sense of security which led me to balloon up to 185.
So please do Do your research. Don’t let anyone deter you from learning everything you can and should know about managing your hypothyroidism. My doctor didn’t tell me anything about nutrition and how it would further help me in managing this condition.
I want to help you make sure you don’t fall into the same trap.
I do want to also point out I am not a doctor I am merely providing information that works for me. It is my hope that my research does help others and that they take a chance and try some of what has worked for me to see if in fact it may help them out too.
