Do you know the risk factors for hypothyroidism?
There are many of them.
This is a meaty list so I am going to break these down into their own topics in a series here on The Hypothyroidism Corner. Each week on Wednesday you will get a new risk factor topic delivered straight to your inbox if you’re a current subscriber and if you haven’t subscribed yet please do so you too can receive this valuable information.
According to author Mary J Shoman in her book Living Well with Hypothyroidism - What Your Doctor Doesn’t Tell You That You Need to Know, here are the risk factors:
A Family History of Thyroid Problems
A Personal History of Thyroid Problems or Irregularities
Family or Personal History of Other Autoimmune or Endocrine Diseases
Aging
Fertility, pregnancy and hormonal issues
Menopause
Smoking and smoking cessation
Drugs
Iodine imbalances
Alcohol during pregnancy
Over consumption of Goitrogenic foods
Over consumption of Soy Products
Environmental Exposures
X-ray and Radiation Treatments
Nasal Radiation Treatments
Infection
Severe Snake Bite
Neck Trauma/Whiplash
Nuclear Plant Exposure
Perchlorate Exposure
Exposure to Other Chemicals
I would also like to mention that Mary J. Shomon is a great author and resource for all things hypothyroidism. I have three of her books. The one I mentioned above, The Thyroid Diet and she also contributed to the forward for What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Hypothyroidism - A Simple Plan for Extraordinary Results written by Ken Blanchard, M.D., Ph.D. with Marietta Abrams Brill. One other book I have that is not written by her but is a great resource is The Hypothyroid Sourcebook by M. Sara Rosenthal.
Seeing as I am going to be dedicating the list to a series I’d like to however, briefly touch on the first risk factor as I don’t want to get too deep into the woods just yet. I do have a history of thyroid issues in my family. The woman that gave birth to me was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. She didn’t manage it though. I have dedicated my life to managing mine.
Tune in to your inbox Wednesday for the first risk factor - Family History of Thyroid Problems.
